HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 9, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball senior
Alex Lorenz blocked the potential game-tying layup with four seconds remaining Tuesday, clinching the Ducks 89-87 win over Ithaca College.
Down one with under 30 seconds to go, senior
Evan Klimchak controlled the defensive rebound off an Ithaca miss before getting fouled. The veteran knocked-down both freebies at the line, giving the Ducks the lead for good.
The win moved Stevens to 10-11 (6-6), while Ithaca fell to 11-10 (5-7).
Lorenz led the Ducks with 21 points and 11 rebounds, giving him his fifth double-double in the last seven games. Klimchak and sophomore
Chris Cosgrove each scored 16, while junior
Patrick Barron scored 18. Freshman
Ryan Coffey matched a career-high with 14 boards.
The Ducks shot 41 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Bombers 47-43.
Stevens jumped-out to a nine point lead five minutes in capped by a three from Coffey, but Ithaca responded with a 13-3 run to take a one point lead midway through the half. Lorenz quickly got the Ducks back in front however, ending the drought with a layup before Cosgrove's three grew the lead to four.
Both teams went back-and-forth from that point on, playing to a 37-37 tie with under three to go. Cosgrove pushed Stevens ahead with a three in final minute, but Ithaca responded with a three of its own on the ensuing possession to take the one point lead going into the break.
The Ducks jumped out of the half with a 10-0 run to go up nine three minutes in, before a three from Barron one minute later built the lead to 10. Stevens held the lead over the next eight minutes before a 9-2 Ithaca run knotted the game at 76 with just under six to go.
The game went back-and-forth from there once again, with no team gaining more than a three point advantage leading into Lorenz's game-clinching block.
The Ducks will return to action Saturday at Utica College.
