HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 12, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team swept a pair of games against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Saturday.
The Ducks moved their record to 6-5, while MIT fell to 0-3.
GAME 1 (Stevens 6, MIT 5)After a scoreless two innings, the Engineers struck first as Alec Echevarria delivered a solo home run to left field to open the third. After two of the next three hitters reached base, Nate Rodman hit a fly ball that was misplaced by the centerfielder allowing two more runs to score.
Freshman
Carlos Leon got the Ducks a run back in the bottom half, delivering his first collegiate home run to right field. In the fourth, senior
Jayson Yano led off with single. Following him, junior
Zeph Walters drilled a home run to right center to even things up. MIT jumped back ahead in the fifth, as they plated a run on a throwing error.
The visitors once again added a run in the seventh, as Garret Greenwood knocked in a run with a single to left field. The Ducks used a one-out rally to go ahead for good, started with a walk from senior
Jonathan Toro.
Toro would advance to third on a fielder's choice by Yano, who took second on a passed ball. Walters delivered his second homer of the day, belting this one to almost the same spot as his first one.
Yano went the distance, striking out nine with only one walk in his complete game. Walters was the lone Duck with multiple, as he went 2-for-4 with five RBI's and two runs scored. Yano went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Greenwood went 3-for-4, while Will Loucks earned a no-decision for the Engineers, tossing six innings allowing only three runs.
GAME 2 (Stevens 6, MIT 2)Senior
Nick Sieber put the Ducks on the board in the bottom of the first, doubling to right center to bring home Toro who led off with a walk. Stevens doubled its lead in the second, as junior
P.J. Wiegartner bashed a solo home run to right.
MIT got a run back in the third, as Jared Schwait reached on an infield single to score a run. The scored remained the same until the bottom of the sixth, as Sieber, junior
Nolan Bennett and Wiegartner hit back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles. Senior
Tyler Bush drove in the final run with a fielder's choice.
The Engineers got a run back in the ninth, as Kendall Helbert hit a homer to get the within four, but that was lone damage of the inning.
Senior
Robert Robbins went the distance for Stevens, striking out a career-high 13 batters. Sieber and Wiegartner each had a pair of extra base hits and two RBI's. Yano was active on the base paths, swiping a pair of bags.
Max Lancaster had two hits in the game two setback for the Engineers.
The Ducks will be back at next Friday, taking on No. 6 Kean University.
