HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 16, 2016) – The No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team topped Juniata College in straight sets Wednesday.
The Ducks won their 10th straight game and moved to 22-4 with the 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 victory. Juniata fell to 7-11.
Stevens stormed out to an early 8-3 lead, capped off with a double-block from seniors
Etan Bennett and
Tim Ferriter. A Ducks attack error brought the gap down to 15-11, but Bennett anchored a pair of consecutive double-blocks to extend the lead to eight. Ferriter tallied four straight points from the service line to end the opening set.
Kyle Seeley put the visitors up 4-1 in the second stanza, but a 3-0 run by Stevens capped off with a kill from junior
Gabe Shankweiler evened the set at four. After a service error cut the Duck lead to 15-13, senior
Chris Vaughan served up four straight to break the set open. A pair of unforced Eagles attack errors bracketed a Shankweiler kill to put the Ducks up two sets.
With the Eagles leading midway through the third set, a 3-0 spurt started by a Seeley attack error put the Ducks ahead for good. Shankweiler and Vaughan slammed home back-to-back kills to further make the gap larger and the Ducks claimed victory when senior
John Eddins attacked an over-pass for the match ending kill.
Shankweiler and Ferriter each had 11 kills, while senior
Etan Bennett had five total blocks. Eddins handed out 31 assists, while sophomore
Cagan Friend led the way with 10 digs.
Seeley led Juniata with nine kills, while Quinn Looper handed out 11 assists. The Eagles only hit .028 on the match, while Stevens hit .310, including .406 in the second set.
The Ducks will travel to Florida to play four matches on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m.
