REDLANDS, Calif. (March 21, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of games to the University of Redlands Monday.
The Ducks dropped to 7-7 with the 7-6, 12-6 losses, while Redlands improved to 16-6
GAME 1After a scoreless two innings, the Ducks drew first blood in the top of the third on and RBI groundout from junior
Garrett Wells. The Bulldogs countered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning, the big blow a two-run triple to centerfield by Mitch Samson.
Stevens regained the lead in the fifth, as junior
Harrison Kaye laid down a sacrifice bunt that was overthrown, and allowed classmate
Michael Mule' from second. The Ducks would tack on two additional runs on groundouts by seniors
Jonathan Toro and
Jayson Yano.
Redlands added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh on productive outs, leaving the Ducks behind by two runs heading into the eighth. Senior
Nick Sieber delivered the tying blow, a two-run double that climbed the hill in right center. The tie was short-lived, as Kyle Wallau of the Bulldogs hammered a first-pitch home run to left center leading off the bottom of the eighth, giving Redlands a lead they did not give up.
Mule' and classmate
Zeph Walters had a pair of hits, as Stevens got hits from eight of the nine hitters in its lineup. Senior
Robert Robbins started and went five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while fanning four.
Joey Warner and Samson each had a pair of RBI's for Redlands in game one.
GAME 2The Ducks scored in their first at bat of game two. Mule' who entered as a pinch runner, scored all the way from first on an RBI double from Walters. Stevens extended the lead in the second, starting with a leadoff walk from freshman
Carlos Leon.
Classmate
Matt Branco laced a single to left field for his first collegiate hit, and managed to distract a fielder attempting to make a tag to help load the bases. Yano grounded into a double-play to score Leon to move the Ducks up two. The visitors added three in the third, as Leon hit an RBI double and Branco blooped a single into short left field scoring a pair.
Senior
Greg Jakusik, who was making his first start since the NCAA Regional in 2014, ran into trouble in the first and second innings, but was able to induce a double-play grounder in each to escape the jam.
The host Bulldogs evened the score at five in the bottom half of the third on a pair of RBI singles, a fielder's choice and a two-run double by Christian Conci. In the top of fourth, Yano led off with a solo homer to right that just cleared the fence for his first dinger of the year.
The Bulldogs controlled the game from there out, putting up a four spot in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Freshen relievers
Ryan Larsen and
Danny Poidomani each made their collegiate debuts, with Larsen getting a pop out to end the seventh inning. Poidomani, senior
Bridger Cohen and junior
Nick Muglia combined to hold Redlands scoreless in the ninth inning. Each tossed 1/3 of an inning.
