No. 16 Men’s Lacrosse Gets Past Montclair

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (March 30, 2016) – The No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team put together a strong defensive effort in the final minute to hold off Montclair State University 8-7 Wednesday.

The Ducks moved to 8-2, while Montclair fell to 4-6. It was second straight victory for the Ducks, who avenged an 11-9 loss to Montclair a year ago.

The Red Hawks controlled the opening five minutes, and eventually scored the first goal. Senior Matt Ferentini knotted the game at one with 4:41 left in the first. The Ducks played better as the first quarter wore on, but Don Finn added a goal just as a man advantage opportunity expired to send MSU to a lead heading into the second.

Just 15 seconds into the second frame, freshman Max Bailey took a feed from Schoonen and leveled the score at two. Sophomore John Boutureira added a marker to give the visitors their first lead, but Montclair scored two goals just 1:31 apart to regain the edge. A big save from freshman Carson White led a Ducks breakout, and freshman Dean Peluso ripped a shot that beat the keeper to once again even things up.

Zach Schreck scored 48 seconds into the third on a man advantage, but senior Andrew Scrutchfield countered with a man up goal 1:51 later. Boutureira added his second of the contest at 9:38, but Brady Wulster took advantage of a Stevens turnover and tied the score at six all. Finn added his second of the game to give MSU its last lead of the game with 11:56 left.

Freshman Eric Radbourne tallied the Ducks second man-up goal of the game with 7:35 left on a pass from sophomore Tommy Dawson. Ferentini scored the biggest goal of the game with 3:2 left, as senior Connor O'Shea collected his second assists of the game. Montclair had the game's final five shots, but White made a pair of saves to preserve the lead.

Junior Jan Schoonen led the way with six ground balls, with White making 15 saves, a season-high. Boutureira, Ferentini and O'Shea all added two points while combining for 16 shots.

The Ducks will be travel to Ithaca College Saturday for a noon showdown with the Bombers.
