ITHACA, N.Y. (April 2, 2016) – A seven goal first quarter propelled No. 20 Ithaca College to 17-7 victory over the No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team Saturday.
The Ducks dropped to 8-3 and 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Ithaca moved to 9-1 and 2-0 in the E8.
After firing the first two shots of the contest wide, the Bombers struck first 1:23 into the game. Freshman
Max Bailey took a feed from senior
Andrew Scrutchfield just under two minutes later to even the game, but the hosts tallied the next three in a four minute span. Senior
Matt Ferentini stopped the run, but Ithaca closed out the frame with three more tallies to build a comfortable edge.
Stephen Morrell added another Bomber marker 1:01 into the second, but freshman
Dean Peluso ripped home a shot at 12 minute mark to put the Ducks within five. Ithaca would tally five more markers before the half ended, sandwiched around a goal by sophomore
John Boutureira.
The crushing blow was the two goals in 25 seconds before the half ended, including one with one second left. Ferentini added his second of the contest in the third quarter, but that tally was answered by Jack Shumway to even out the third.
Freshman
Nicholas Carnovale got his first goal of the year off a pass from Bailey to open the fourth, and Scrutchfield added a goal but the Bombers scored the last three of the game to establish the difference.
Ferentini led the Ducks with three points, while Scrutchfield was the team leader with five shots. Junior
Jan Schoonen caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls to lead the defense, while freshman
Carson White made 13 saves.
John Januskiewicz had two goals and four assists for the Bombers, who had three players record five or more points.
The Ducks return home for a 1 p.m. tilt next Saturday against Houghton College.
