Baseball Back In Win Column Against Rutgers-Newark

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 7, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Rutgers University-Newark Monday.

The Ducks evened its mark at 4-4, while Newark fell to 2-3.

Stevens started the game off like it has so many times this year, with first inning runs. After the first three runners reached base, junior Zeph Walters and senior Nick Sieber lined singles to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

Senior Robert Robbins started for the Ducks, and ran into trouble in each of the first two innings. Each inning he loaded the bases, but was able to escape unscathed.  The Ducks added another run in third, as senior Jayson Yano walked and swiped second. Sieber would come up and single to left center, scoring his classmate.

Sieber continued to wield the hot stick, mashing a home-run to right center in the bottom of the fifth for his first homer of the season. Robbins settled down, tossing five shutout inning. Robbins got some defensive help in the fourth, as junior Harrison Kaye lunged for a line drive up the middle, snared it and made the play to beat the runner by half a step.

Rutgers-Newark got a run back in the seventh, as Josh Cote reached on a run-scoring fielder's choice. Senior Ryan Patterson was able to get out of the seventh without giving up another hit. Fellow senior Greg Jakusik entered in the eighth with men on first and second and one out, but got two ground balls to retire the side.

Walters came on in the ninth for the save, and after walking the leadoff batter, the tying run was on deck. Justin Marks hit hot shot down the line at third that freshman Carlos Leon picked off, fired to second and onto first to complete the 5-4-3 double play. Walters would fan Cote to end the game.

Sieber was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, and the Ducks collected 11 hits a unit. Yano saw his six-game hitting streak end, but came around to score two runs. Robbins allowed two hits and four walks in his five innings, while striking out seven.

Cameron Dias led Newark with two hits in the loss.

The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow, traveling to Ewing to battle The College of New Jersey.
