Baseball Falls To TCNJ, 10-6

EWING, N.J. (March 8, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a 10-6 decision to The College of New Jersey Wednesday.

The loss dropped the Ducks to 4-5 while TCNJ moved to 2-0

Stevens used some small ball to score a run in the first. After a leadoff single by senior Johnathan Toro, he advanced to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. Junior Zeph Walters knocked him home with an RBI single.

The Ducks scored three more in the second on sacrifice bunt by freshman Matt Branco and a sac fly by Toro. The other run same on a throwing error on a bunt that allowed a runner to score from second. After the two innings, the Ducks seemed to be in control up 4-0.

TCNJ staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the third to score three runs on only two hits in the frame. The Lions took advantage of two hit by pitches and two walks. Toro would add another sacrifice fly in the fourth, but the Lions would take the lead for good in the bottom half, tacking on three more runs.

The hosts tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, the big blow coming on an RBI single by Patrick Anderson. In the sixth, the Lions added another, but were denied the chance to add an additional run. Alex Christian was caught trying to steal as part of a double steal, keeping the deficit at four. Anderson would extend the lead in the seventh with an RBI groundout.

The Ducks threatened in the ninth with one out, loading the bases. Senior Jayson Yano would scoot home on a wild pitch to cut the gap to four, and junior Nolan Bennett walked to reload the bases. But Matt Curry was brought in out of the bullpen and promptly struck out the next two hitters to close out the game.

Toro, Walters, Bennett, senior Nick Sieber and junior Michael Mule' all had two hits, while freshman Charlie Reugger tossed a shutout inning of relief with two strikeouts.

Joe Cirillo picked up the win for the Lions with four innings of relief, striking out three.
