UTICA, N.Y. (April 13, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team topped Utica College 8-2 in Empire 8 Conference action Wednesday.
Stevens moved to 17-10, 9-2 in the E8 while Utica fell to 2-15, 2-7 in the E8.
The Ducks put the first two runs on the board with two outs in the first. Senior
Jayson Yano led off the inning a walk, and moved over to third on a stolen base and a ground out. Junior
Zeph Walters continued his hot April with an RBI single, and went to second on an error. Senior
Nick Sieber followed suit, hitting an RBI infield single. Senior
Robert Robbins put runners on base in the first, second and fourth innings via walks, but escaped out of the jam each time.
The bottom of the order padded three runs to the Stevens total in the fifth. Junior
Harrison Kaye led off the frame with a walk, and swiped second and third. Kaye would come home on a balk with one out. Juniors
Garrett Wells and
Nolan Bennett then got on base in front of Walters, who belted a two-run double to score both runners.
The Pioneers got a run back in the sixth, as they strung together three hits, the third being an RBI single by Tim Quinlan. Yano manufactured a run in the seventh, leading off with a single and stealing second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scampered home on an error by the second basemen.
The Ducks concluded the scoring in the eighth with a two-out rally. Junior
P.J. Wiegartner and Wells were plunked with pitches sandwiched between a Yano walk, and Bennett singled home a pair to add two more runs to the scoreboard.
Walters went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, while Yano was 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Robbins tossed five hit-less innings, walking four while striking out seven. Seniors
Greg Jakusik and
Danny McIntyre each threw a scoreless inning of relief, fanning a pair each.
Vincent Burillo had two hits for Utica in the setback.
The Ducks will take on Vassar College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
