ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 17, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored seven times in the top of the 10th inning to top Elmira College 15-10 Sunday afternoon.
The Ducks moved to 19-10 and 10-2 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Elmira dropped to 8-15 and 2-8 in the E8. Stevens swept the three game series between the two sides this year.
Stevens started the scoring with four runs in the first with one out. With two on, senior
Nick Sieber singled to center field scoring a pair. Junior
Michael Mule' got a run home with a groundout, and Sieber would swipe home plate to tack on another. The Soaring Eagles responded with a single run in the home first, as Conor Bawiec knocked home a single.
Senior
Jayson Yano continued his torrid April with an RBI single up the middle in the second, and junior
Nolan Bennett had a run-scoring fielder's choice in the fourth to put Stevens up 6-1 and seemingly in the driver's seat. The Soaring Eagles would add five runs to tie the game in the fifth, the big hit a two-run single by Dylan Bellinger.
Sieber put the visitors back in front 7-6 with a sac fly in the sixth, but Elmira would tally a pair on a consecutive RBI singles in their at bat in the sixth to grab their first lead of the afternoon. The hosts hung onto the lead until the top of the ninth.
Pinch hitter David Ferrara reached on a walk with one out, and pinch runner
Harrison Kaye moved into scoring position, advancing on a wild pitch. Yano stepped up and delivered a game-tying single, scoring Kaye. Elmira had a runner on second with one out in the ninth, but senior
Ryan Patterson got a pair of ground outs to end the inning and head to extra innings.
After a pair of walks to lead off the 10th, Sieber belted a double to right field to put the Ducks back on top for good. Mule and classmate
P.J. Wiegartner each had RBI hits, and Toro smacked a two-run triple to left center. The final blow was two-run home run by Yano to left field, his third of the year. Bellinger hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame, but that was as close as Elmira would get.
The senior duo of Yano and Sieber combined to go 8-for-11 with seven RBI's, while Mule' chipped in two hits and two RBI's. Toro stole a pair of bases while also going 3-for-5 in the nine hole.
Freshman
Danny Poidomani recorded a big strikeout with runners on first and second and one out in the eighth to preserve the one run deficit at the time. Junior
Zeph Walters threw two innings of relief for the win, striking out three.
Bellinger had four RBI's in the setback for Elmira, while Hayden Rothenburg collected three hits.
