Ithaca Tops Baseball In 10 Innings

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Ithaca College 4-3 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.

The Ducks fell to 14-10 overall and 6-2 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Ithaca evened up at 9-9, 2-1 in the E8.

Stevens struck first in the bottom of the second, as senior Jonathan Toro picked a perfect time for his first career home run. Toro hit a fly ball to left field and the winds of Dobbelaar Field picked it up and carried it out to put the hosts up 1-0.

The score remained that way until the fifth, when Ithaca's Josh Savacool hit a two-run double down the left field to score a pair of runners. The Ducks answered back in the home half of the fifth, as junior Nolan Bennett hit a solo home run for his second dinger in as many days. With one away in the visitor sixth, Ithaca got two runners on for Matt Carey, who laced a ribbie single to center.

Junior Michael Mule' knotted things up in the seventh with an RBI single, after a pair of walks had loaded the bags combined with a single from Bennett. Ithaca escaped further damage, getting a strike out and a fielder's choice to end the jam. The Ducks loaded the bases in ninth, but saw the inning end on a fly ball and a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score.

In the 10th, IC loaded the bases for catcher Ryan Henchey, who hit a squibber down the line. The ball took a strange hop and bounced past Sieber allowing the go-ahead run to score. Ithaca would retire the Ducks in order in the bottom of the frame, escaping Hoboken with two wins.

Yano collected three hits while junior Zeph Walters and Sieber each walked three times. Yano threw nine innings, allowing three runs while fanning five.

Ryan Contegni earned the win, throwing five innings of one run ball out of the bullpen, striking out five. Webb Little had three hits in the Bombers victory.
