Baseball Sweeps Elmira Friday

ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 8, 2016) – A seven run eighth inning propelled the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team to a 12-3 game two victory over Elmira College Friday.

The Ducks won the first game 3-0, and moved to 16-10 overall, 8-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. Elmira fell to 6-13, 0-6 in the E8.

GAME 1 (Stevens 3, Elmira 0)
Senior Jayson Yano led off game one with a single to center, and moved to third on a pair of groundouts. Junior Zeph Walters reached on an infield single to second base to score Yano, putting the visitors up 1-0. Yano started for the Ducks and retired the first nine Soaring Eagles.

Yano ran into a small bit of trouble in the fourth, putting the tying run on first to lead off the frame. But the senior got a pickoff and a line out to end the threat. 

The Ducks put together a two-out rally in the sixth, tacking on the final two runs. Freshman Matthew Pasko laced a ribbie single to center, and then him and Yano executed a double-steal, scoring Pasko from third. The Soaring Eagles sent the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Yano picked off a runner to end the game.

Yano did it all for Stevens, going 3-for-4 at the dish and tossing a complete game three-hitter, striking out nine.

Dylan Bellinger led Elmira with a pair of hits.

GAME 2 (Stevens 12, Elmira 3)
For the second straight game, the Ducks added a run in their first at bat. Yano led off with a double, and was knocked in by junior Nolan Bennett, who hit an RBI single. Bellinger hit a homer off senior Robert Robbins to tie the game, and the hosts took the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.

Walters had his second RBI of the afternoon with a single to score Yano, but Elmira regained the lead on a double by Nate Hanner. The Ducks took advantage of a pair of errors in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good, and a single by senior Jonathan Toro put the visitors up 5-3 at the of the visiting half of the fifth.

Leading 5-3 heading into the top of the eighth, the Ducks scored seven times with two outs to break the game open. Walters and Sieber hit back-to-back run scoring doubles, and Yano drilled a single to center to score a pair of runs.

The bullpen of seniors Bret Viola and Ryan Patterson along with junior Nick Muglia combined for three innings of one hit relief. Robbins went six innings to earn the win, striking out eight while allowing only one earned run. Walters had four hits, while Yano and Sieber had three each.

Conor Bawiec led Elmira with three hits and two runs scored.
