EWING, N.J. (September 1, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team suffered its first setback of the season Thursday in the form of a 6-0 loss to No. 3 The College of New Jersey.
The loss drops Stevens to 0-1, while TCNJ opens its season at 1-0.
Junior
Taylor Welch led the Ducks with two shots on goal, while sophomore
Hannah Silvestri added one of her own. Senior
Nolie Prouty and junior
Cassidy O'Hearn each registered shots as well, while senior
Emily Stukenborg recorded seven saves in the cage.
As a team, the Ducks tallied nine corners.
TCNJ jumped out to the early one-goal lead with a score two minutes in, before adding to it with goals at the five and six minute marks to go up 3-0. Two more goals over the next seven minutes put the Ducks in a 5-0 hole, but Stevens responded with shots over the final 15 minutes of the half to exert some offensive pressure.
The Lions added one more to their lead early in the second, and went into defensive mode from there to limit Stevens' scoring opportunities.
O'Hearn did register a shot with seven minutes remaining in regulation, but the ball sailed wide to keep the TCNJ lead in tact heading into the closing minutes.
The Ducks will be off from competition this weekend before hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the home opener.
