Sugarman’s Overtime Goal Seals Men’s Soccer Victory

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (September 21, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer sophomore Alex Sugarman scored in the 103rd minute Wednesday to give the Ducks a 2-1 overtime win over the Merchant Marine Academy.

The win moved Stevens to 2-3-1, while Merchant Marine fell to 2-3-2.

After playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and a first overtime, Sugarman blasted a shot to the back of the net off a feed from sophomore Daniel Aversano. The goal was the first of Sugarman's career, and ended Stevens' three-match skid.

Senior Jay Mikula and junior Tommy Dorsay each recorded five shots, while sophomore keeper Aaron Henry made five saves in net.

As a team, the Ducks outshot Merchant Marine 21-15, and led in corners 9-4.

Senior Patrick Masur just missed giving Stevens the early advantage off a corner opportunity that went left of the post, but the veteran recovered with a penalty-shot goal in the 17th minute to put Stevens up one.

The Ducks threatened for more over the course of the half including a pair of shots on goal from Aversano and junior Jacob Ulasevich in the closing minutes, but Merchant goalie Cory Maier made the save on both to maintain Stevens' one-goal lead heading into the break.

Stevens continued its pressure on offense early in the second with three shots over the first 15 minutes, including one from Mikula that banged off the post, but Merchant escaped the barrage before connecting on the equalizer in the 62nd.

Stevens tried to get it back with shots from Ulasevich and Dorsay that were saved by Maier, before another from Dorsay in the 78th once against fell into the hands of the Merchant keeper.

The Mariners answered with a trio of shots over the final eight minutes, but the first went wide before Henry made saves on the final two to send the match into overtime.

Stevens tallied two shots to Merchant's one in the first overtime period, before Sugarman's game winner early in the second ended the match.

The Ducks will continue their road swing Saturday with a 12 p.m. match at St. John Fisher.
