Second Half Surge Pushes Men’s Soccer To Win Column

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half Wednesday in a 3-1 win over The College of New Jersey.

The win evened Stevens' record at 1-1-0, and avenged a loss from last fall. TCNJ fell to 1-2-0 with the loss.

Junior Tommy Dorsay led the Ducks offensively with a pair of goals, while senior Patrick Masur chipped-in with the third. Senior Jay Mikula and sophomore Daniel Aversano each tallied assists, and sophomore keeper Aaron Henry made five saves in net.

Team-wise, each side registered 13 shots in the match, but Stevens held the edge in tries on goal, 7-6.

Stevens exerted some early offensive pressure with a trio of shots in the first 20 minutes, before tallying three more in the final 15 that failed to reach the back of the net.

TCNJ answered with some pressure of its own off a pair of headers in the final 11 minutes, but each went wide to preserve the 0-0 deadlock heading into the half.

The Lions did finally break through two minutes into the second to grab the lead, but Stevens provided the answer less than three minutes later off Dorsay's first goal of the season to tie things at one. Dorsay took a nice feed between two defenders from Aversano just above the box, before firing into the top-right corner for the goal.

Masur continued the momentum in the 61st with a header off a cross from Mikula, followed 16 minutes later with Dorsay's second goal of the game. Dorsay took control of a cross-field clear from Henry, beating the defense before the goalie for the goal.

The Lions came close to inching closer in the 85th with a penalty kick off the foot of Nick Costelloe, but Henry made the diving stop to preserve the lead and send Stevens home with the win.

The Ducks will face their first road test of the season Saturday when they travel to No. 14 Montclair St. University at 7 p.m.
