HARTWICK, N.Y. (January 10, 2017) – Despite a career-high 21 points from sophomore
Ryan Coffey, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was outscored by 13 points in the second half Tuesday night in an 88-79 Empire 8 loss to Hartwick.
The loss dropped Stevens to 8-3 (2-1), while Hartwick moved to 9-4 (2-2).
Coffey also contributed 12 boards to capture his third double-double of the season, while seniors
Patrick Barron and
Evan Klimchak both scored in double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively. Junior
Jake Krantz also registered a career high with nine boards in addition to eight points.
Hartwick raced out to a 13-point lead eight minutes in, but Stevens responded with a 14-2 run keyed by a pair of threes from Coffey to pull within one. Hartwick ended the steak with a layup with 6:47 left on the clock, but a layup from Barron on the ensuing possession followed by a three from Kilmchak gave the Ducks their first lead since the game's opening minute.
A pair of free throws from Coffey four minutes later extended the lead to four, before Barron's three in the closing seconds rebuilt the lead to four heading into the break.
Barron made the lead five with another three early in the second, but the Hawks answered with a 9-0 run to re-take the lead by four three minutes into the half. Hartwick built the lead to 11 midway through the half, before making it 14 with just under six to go.
The Ducks got to within nine off Coffey's jumper during the six minute mark, but it's the last time they would be within single digits until the game's final possession as Hartwick maintained its comfortable margin through the remainder of regulation.
Stevens will be back in action Friday night when it kicks off a three-game homestand against Houghton at 8 p.m.
