HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 13, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team set a season-low with 48 points allowed Friday night in an 83-48 Empire 8 win over Houghton in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 9-3 (3-1), while Houghton fell to 6-6 (1-2).
Senior
Evan Klimchak led the way offensively for Stevens with 19 points in addition to five rebounds and three assists, while sophomore
Ryan Coffey and freshman
Spencer Cook each chipped in with 13. Freshman
Michael Zignorski scored seven with five boards, and senior
Patrick Barron tallied five points and four assists.
Stevens shot 48 percent from the field and 45 percent from the beyond the arc, and outscored the Highlanders 43-19 in the second half.
A three-point play from Coffey six minutes into the game gave Stevens a five-point advantage, before Klimchak's layup one minute later made it seven. Houghton responded with an 11-6 spurt to pull within two, but a three from junior
Chris Cosgrove followed by a jumper from Coffey made it 29-22 Stevens with 6:10 left on the clock.
Stevens' defense went to work from there, holding Houghton scoreless over the final four and a half minutes before a three from Cook and layup from freshman
Colin McKenna gave the Ducks an 11-point lead heading into the break.
Stevens exploded out of the half with a 22-2 run keyed by five threes to open up a 31-point lead, before a layup from McKenna made it 33 with under five minutes to go. Sophomore
Conor Barron made it 35 with a layup less than a minute later, followed by a three from freshman
JoJo Mosca to make it 36.
The rout was well on by that point as Stevens earned its largest lead of the night at 37 in the closing seconds in route to the blowout win.
Stevens will be back in action tomorrow against Alfred at 5 p.m. in Hoboken.
