ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 21, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday in the form of an 84-63 Empire 8 road loss to St. John Fisher.
The loss dropped Stevens to 12-4 (6-2), while Fisher moved to 11-4 (6-0) and maintained its first-place position in the E8.
Sophomore
Jayson Winick led the way offensively for the Ducks with a career-high 15 points in addition to six rebounds, while senior
Evan Klimchak scored 13. Freshman
Spencer Cook scored nine with three boards, and freshman
Colin McKenna went for six points and four rebounds.
Stevens forced 17 Fisher turnovers on the defensive end.
Each side went back and forth over the initial five minutes before a 16-2 Fisher run put the Ducks in a 14-point hole eight minutes into regulation. Stevens responded with four unanswered from the line to cut the deficit to 10, but the Cardinals roared back with a 24-2 run over the next seven minutes to balloon its lead to 32.
The Ducks refused to cave however, chipping away in the final minute with a 7-2 spurt capped by a Klimchak jumper to get within 24 at the break.
Stevens continued its momentum by scoring the first six points of the second half to get within 18, before a layup from McKenna with under eight to play brought the Ducks to within 16. That's as close as they would get however as Fisher answered with a 7-0 run before maintaining at least a 19-point advantage over the final five minutes.
Stevens will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Utica in the first of a two-game homestand at Canavan Arena.
