Hahn and Guketlov team to lead women’s basketball to sixth straight win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 28, 2017)  – Senior Erica Guketlov and freshman Zoe Hahn combined for 27 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 77-37 victory over Utica College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Canavan Arena.

The Ducks scored ten consecutive points in the first quarter to break the game open and then held the Pioneers to a mere 13 second-half points in securing its sixth straight victory. 

Junior Megan Brown secured 13 rebounds and graduate student Kaitlyn Astel and junior Anna Toke combined for 16 points and 13 boards for Stevens, who improved to 9-7 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

Ashley Mayo led all players with 18 points and Maggie Tabone snagged a game-high 10 rebounds for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Stevens remains tied with Hartwick College atop the E8 standings.

Turning Point
  • After spotting Utica a 3-0 lead, the Ducks ran off 10 straight points to take a 10-3 lead.
  • Astel's jumpshot opened the scoring for Stevens.
  • Toke followed with a short jumper of her own, giving the Ducks a 4-3 lead. Brown assisted on both baskets.
  • The junior forward sank the ensuing free throw to convert the three-point play and followed with an additional pair of free throws two possessions later to open a 7-3 lead.
  • Freshman Alison Criswell sank a traditional three-pointer to close the run. 

Inside the Numbers
  • All 12 players scored for the Ducks for the second time this season.
  • Guketlov's 13 points were the third double-digit scoring effort of the season.
  • Stevens held the edge in points in the paint, points off turnovers, fast-break points, and bench points.
  • Already leading the conference in scoring defense, Utica's 37 points was a season-low by a Stevens opponent.
  • In the stifling second half, the Ducks forced Utica into 4-for-28 (14%) shooting from the floor, including 0-for-5 from behind the arc. 
  • The Ducks drained a season-high 12 three-point baskets, shooting 52% from three-point range.
  • Guketlov led the three-point barrage, sinking 3-of-5 attempts. Hahn was 2-for-3 from behind the arc and senior Daphne Ginn drained both of her three-point field goal attempts.
  • Five different Ducks recorded a block and seven different players collected a steal.

Unsung Heroes
  • Hahn again provided a spark off the bench, leading the Ducks with 14 points. She also blocked a career-high three shots.
  • Junior Brooke Stoddard snagged six rebounds for the second game in a row, helping Stevens earn a 47-43 edge on the boards.
  • Eleven different players recorded 10 minutes or more as Stevens used a balanced attack to secure the victory.
