Shankweiler leads the way as Men’s Volleyball sweeps Ramapo Tri-Match

MAHWAH, N.J. (January 28, 2017)  – Senior outside hitter Gabe Shankweiler totaled 35 kills as the No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept Ramapo College (25-18, 12-25, 25-17, 25-17) and Medaille College (25-22, 25-13, 25-15) Saturday afternoon in a tri-match hosted by the Roadrunners.

Sophomore Jacob Patterson totaled 63 assists on the afternoon, helping guide the Ducks to a .360 attack percentage over the two games. Senior Alexander Carpenter totaled 10 blocks as the Ducks improved to 5-0.

The hosting Roadrunners downed Medaille in the final match of the day to rebound from their first loss of the season to improve to 4-1. Medaille closed the day at 2-2 after dropping a pair of games.

Volleys and Points
  • Opening the day with a match against the host school, Stevens spotted Ramapo with the first two points of the day.
  • Freshman David Lehman notched his first kill of the day to put the Ducks on the board.
  • A bad Ramapo set produced the first tie of the match at 3-3.
  • A series of attack errors produced a three-point edge for Stevens (7-4).
  • The Ducks would never relinquish their first-set lead, winning the set on a Patterson kill of a Niko Lambert set.
  • Ramapo rebounded from the opening-set loss to open a five-point lead midway through the set 15-10).
  • Stevens rallied to pull within four at 19-15 and 20-16.
  • A kill from Justin Feigeles gave Ramapo a 25-21 victory in the second frame, handing the Ducks their first set loss of the season.
  • After dropping its first set of the season, Stevens jumped out in the third set, scoring the frame's first two points.
  • Ramapo rallied to reclaim the lead at 5-4, before Lehman and Shankweiler successfully attacked for the Ducks.
  • The teams would alternate six straight points before Lehman notched a pair of kills to open a three-point lead.
  • Shankweiler closed the stanza with his seventh kill of the set to give Stevens a 25-17 set victory.
  • In the final set, Lehman notched a pair of kills and Ramapo made a pair of attach errors to open an early four-point lead for Stevens.
  • The teams exchanged points through the frame as the Stevens lead alternated between one and two points through the midpoint of the set.
  • After a Garrett Fitzsimmons service error regained the serve for the Ducks, Stevens reeled off three points to back the hosts against the wall.
  • Following a Ramapo error, Shankweiler served an ace and Lehman struck a well-placed ball to close out the match for the Ducks.
  • After downing the hosts, 3-1, the Ducks faced a quick turnaround against Medaille, however Stevens recorded the first three points of the match.
  • The teams alternated points under Medaille opened a two-point lead at 15-13.
  • Stevens rallied to open a 19-17 lead, forcing the Mavericks into a timeout.
  • After Medaille regained a 22-21 edge, two kills by Shankweiler, sandwiched around kills from Jordan Stuart and Dylan Deboer, gave Stevens a 1-0 lead.
  • After the late rally gave Stevens the first set, the Ducks took advantage of sloppy play from the Mavericks to open a 5-2 lead.
  • The Stevens block produced several difficult offensive positions for Elms, leading to a 16-9 advantage.
  • The teams alternated points until a Shankweiler kill reclaimed the serve for the Ducks at 20-13.
  • Four straight Medaille errors with Patterson serving produced a set point for the Ducks, which Carpenter converted off a Patterson set.
  • In the match's final set, the Ducks took control of the match after three consecutive Medaille errors, opening a 10-5 lead.
  • Medaille closed the gap to 17-15 before senior Scott Russell served eight straight points to close the match. Four Medaille errors and kills from Carpenter, Shankweiler, and senior Ian Bennett produced the victory for Stevens.

Inside the Numbers
  • In addition to his performance on the outside, Shankweiler finished second on the team in digs (11) over the two matches. Patterson led the team with 13.
  • The Ducks totaled 28 blocks on the afternoon.
  • Stevens only committed one receiving error against Medaille.
  • In the second set against the Mavericks, Stevens recorded 13 kills on 18 attempts with only one error for a season-best 0.667 attack percentage.
