Men’s Soccer Claws Back for 4-2 Victory Over Sage

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 7, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team erased two one-goal deficits to knock off The Sage Colleges 4-2 in Empire 8 action at home on Saturday. The Ducks remain unbeaten (3-0-1) in league play. Haddy Abdelhady had a goal and an assist for Stevens.

  • There was a tremendous diving save by Stevens' Aaron Henry 10 minutes in, taking away an excellent scoring chance for the Gators
  • Both GK's made diving saves within a minute of each other in the 15th minute to keep the sheet scoreless
  • Sage's Mike Chriavalloti came up with another great save on header by Jacob Ulasevich a few minutes later in what was still a scoreless game
  • Derlis Zayas earned the first goal of the afternoon at 25:14, on a give-and-go play by Paul Reynoso. It would be the only goal of the first half.
  • Stevens tied it up when Abdelhady got in the way of the Sage goalkeeper trying to clear the ball. He stepped in the way of the big kick, blocked the ball back and it rolled all the way into the Sage cage for the score at 51:55
  • Two minutes later, the Gators countered with another goal by Zayas. Kevin Saar and Heriberto Gomez earned assists of the set piece that saw the ball go through the Stevens wall
  • This lead was short-lived; Niko Figueroa headed in Kevin Brito's corner kick at 57:25 to knot things up again at two

Turning Point
  • At 76:00, Chriavalloti was sent off for a dangerous play. Sage had to swap goaltenders and on the re-start Andrew Masur unleased a laser into the top corner of the net from 25 yards away to give the Ducks their first lead.
  • The Gators also had to play a man down the rest of the match
  • With four minutes remaining, Abdelhady broke down the D on the goalline and slid a nifty pass to set up Jimmy Doran for his first goal of the year and make the final score 4-2

Coach's Corner
"We battled to get this win after a below average start to the game..... credit to Sage for having an extremely effective game plan... we are happy to pick up the three points and move onto a tough away contest to Elmira next week"

Unsung Hero
"Nicholas Cousillas was a rock in the back line and made an incredible impact when we moved him into midfield "

Before tangling with Elmira the Ducks will host the College of Staten Island in non-conference action on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
