Women’s Basketball Runs Out of Time vs. NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 15, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team outscored New York University 18-9 in the fourth quarter, but the comeback bid fell just short on opening night for both teams in a 68-65 matchup in the Big Apple on Wednesday.

Three Ducks were in double figures, namely seniors Megan Brown, Anna Toke and Sydney Darby. Brown finished 6-8 from the floor, Toke was 6-7 from the line and Darby hit the only three buckets from downtown for the Ducks on the night.

  • Senior Kaitlyn Read led the Violets with a game-best 30 points.
  • The Duck defense shut down NYU in the final 10 minutes. They did not allow any fast-breaks or points in the paint during that stretch to help fuel the comeback
  • Stevens closed the gap to one point with 3:33 remaining on a layup by Brown, but Janean Cuffee hit a three on the next NYU possession to keep the Ducks at arm's-length
  • The Ducks had possession with 11 seconds remaining and a chance to tie, but could not get their final shot to fall
  • Toke led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks
  • Alison Criswell and Maddi Hahn matched Toke and Brown with a team-best three steals
  • Freshmen Christina Li, Sam Winter, Sydney Wind and Hahn all scored their first collegiate points, with Li and Hahn earning starts
  • All nine Stevens players who saw action in today's game scored at least once

"I was very proud of our hustle, fight and overall team chemistry in our first outing tonight," said head coach Megan Haughey. "We had too many turnovers, didn't capitalize on the foul line and needed to control the boards more than we did in order to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves this year. We will continue to build on the positives and focus on our next opponent."

The women's basketball team will travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania this weekend to take part in the Terry Greene Tipoff Classic at Franklin & Marshall College. The Ducks will take on Elizabethtown College on Saturday at 1 p.m. to start the event.
