Men’s Basketball Knocks Off Suffolk in OT

WILLAIMSTOWN, Mass. (November 17, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2017-18 season with a thrilling overtime win over Suffolk University on Friday night. Jayson Winick and Spencer Cook scored 22 points each for the Ducks.

In the overtime period, Stevens fought off back-to-back Ram three-pointers to begin the extra session and closed the period on a 7-0 run to earn the win. Winick scored seven points in overtime, with Cook and Frank Amari splitting the team's other eight points evenly.

There was plenty of drama in regulation as well. The Ducks overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to take a 10 point lead with five minutes remaining, and still enjoyed a five-point lead with two minutes to go. At that juncture, Suffolk's Thomas Duffy took matters into his own hands, knocking down a three and a pair of free throws to tie the game with 38 seconds left.

After a fruitless Stevens possession, the Rams had a chance to win at the buzzer, but Thomas Cook came up with a huge block on a Duffy layup attempt to send the game to overtime. He had the Ducks' only two blocks of the game, and the final one could not have come at a better time.

  • Amari was also in double figures in the game with 14 points and paced the team with three assists. He helped lead the Stevens bench to a total of 34 points in the game
  • Spencer Cook led the team with nine rebounds
  • Winick buried both shots from behind the arc for the Ducks
  • Dylan Walsh, Kevin Florio, Michael Zignorski, Chris Cosgrove, Alec DiPietrantonio and Ryan Coffey also scored in the game for the Ducks
  • The contest featured four ties and six lead changes
  • Suffolk shot 32 three-pointers out of 57 total field goals attempted
  • Stevens took 62 shots and went to the line an additional 29 times

The men's basketball team will return to action tomorrow to finish up the Williams Invitational. The Ducks earned the right to play homestanding national No. 3 Williams College at 4 p.m. with their win on Friday night.
