WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (November 18, 2017) – Sophomore
Spencer Cook netted a game-high 24 points, but an 11-3 second-half run helped No. 3 Williams College down the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team 73-55 Saturday in the Williams Tip-Off Tournament final.
Nine different players found the score sheet for Stevens, who fell to 1-2.
Matt Karpowicz came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting to pace Williams. The sophomore center also grabbed seven rebounds. Kyle Scadlock recorded a double-double for Williams with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Ephs improved to 2-0.
Turning Point
- After the teams struggled for offensive consistency in the first half, Stevens scored the first six points of the second half to tie game at 30 on consecutive three-point plays by Cook. The Washington Township, New Jersey native opened second-half scoring with a layup plus one. After sinking the ensuing free throw, Cook made a traditional three-pointer on Stevens' next possession.
- After the teams alternated misses, Cole Teal connected for three-pointer of his own to again give Williams an edge.
- A Scadlock layup pushed the lead to five before a Ryan Coffey trey trimmed the lead to two.
- The Ephs responded with consecutive threes to push the lead back to eight.
- The Ducks would only get as close as six points over the remainder of the game.
Inside the Numbers
- Cook narrowly missed setting a new career high. The reigning Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year scored 25 points against Utica in last season's E8 semifinal.
- Senior Thomas Cook and Coffey each grabbed 10 rebounds. It was the second double-digit rebounding effort for Cook, while Coffey collected his first of the season.
- Stevens committed three more turnovers than the Ephs, leading to a 17-11 edge for Williams in points off turnovers.
- Williams held the edge in bench points (32-12), while Stevens claimed an edge in second-chance points, despite each team pulling down 44 rebounds.
- Bobby Casey also scored 15 points off the bench for Williams as the Ephs had four players reach double-digits.
- Junior Jayson Winick led Stevens with four assists.
- Consecutive layups by Thomas Cook and Winick helped Stevens jump out to a 4-0 lead. The four-point advantage would be the only lead Stevens held on the night.
From the Court
- "We certainly battled and competed tonight, but we need to play consistently for 40 minutes."
- "Williams is a very strong team and we had our chances to make a run, but we have to grow a little bit in taking better care of the basketball and shooting a little more consistently."
- "I'm looking for a better effort against FDU in our home opener."
