HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 21, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team flirted with 100 points in their home opener on Tuesday, a 96-86 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham.
Spencer Cook led the Ducks with 22 points and
JoJo Mosca added 17 on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc.
The Devils outshot the Ducks 50 percent to 44 percent in the first half, but thanks to a 9-5 edge in turnovers and a 21-18 lead in rebounding Stevens had taken 12 more shots and owned a 43-36 lead at the break.
Spencer Cook had 13 points to lead Stevens in the first half.
Stevens never trailed in the second period and stretched its lead to 19 points (79-60) with 4:35 to go in the game. FDU made a valiant comeback bid and cut their deficit all the way to five, but the Ducks made their free throws to pull away in the final minute.
Ryan Coffey led Stevens with eight rebounds, while
Thomas Cook led the team with a pair of blocks.
The Ducks led every stat category: rebounds (43-41), assists (17-13), blocks (3-2), steals (6-5), points off turnovers (23-14) and had fewer fouls called on them.
13 different players saw action for Stevens. All but two scored. Mosca came off the bench with his 17 points, as did
Frank Amari, who finished with 11.
FDU was led by Rajaan Dixon and Steve Herdman, who both posted double-doubles for the Devils.
"We had contributions from a lot of different guys tonight," said Stevens head coach
Bobby Hurley. "Still, we have many areas to improve on. I'm happy our guys found a way to win as we take a few days off to enjoy the Thanksgiving break."
After their Thanksgiving break, the Ducks will return to action on Sunday at local rival Rutgers-Newark for a 3 p.m. tip.
