Key fourth quarter run leads Montclair State over Women’s Basketball

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 27, 2017)  – Freshman Sam Winter scored a career-high 12 points to lead four players in double figures, but a 10-0 fourth quarter run propelled Montclair State University over the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team 65-56 Monday night in non-conference action at Canavan Arena.

Senior Megan Brown recorded her 22nd career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and classmate Anna Toke had 10 points, eight boards and a game-high three blocks for the Ducks, who fell to 1-4. 

Reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year Katie Sire scored a game-high 23 points and Taylor Harmon added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Hawks, who moved to 4-1. Montclair State improved to 8-2 all-time against Stevens, including a perfect 4-0 at Canavan Arena.

Turning Point
  • Leading by one to start the final quarter, Taylor Brown opened fourth-quarter with a three-pointer to push the Stevens' deficit to four. It was Brown's lone triple of the evening.
  • Freshman Maddi Hahn sank a jumper to pull the Ducks within a basket.
  • A Sire layup pushed the Montclair lead back to four.
  • Montclair turned up the pressure, forcing four Stevens misses and a pair of turnovers, while four different Red Hawks scored as the guests used a 10-0 run to open a 12-point lead.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 44-35 edge on the glass, with each team pulling down 12 offensive rebounds. The rebounding advantage led to a 9-7 edge for Stevens in second-chance points.
  • Stevens scored first for the fourth straight game.
  • The Ducks held Montclair State to 20 percent shooting in the first half, including 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The Ducks forced MSU into 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) on the evening.
  • For the game, Montclair State outshot Stevens (41.9%-36.8%).
  • Stevens shot a season-best 9-of-11 (81.8%) from the free throw line.
  • Hahn totaled a career-high 10 points off the bench, including a nifty step-back three-pointer. 
  • The Stevens bench outscored Montclair's 15-6.
  • Montclair State didn't take its first lead until late in the third quarter on Sire's fastbreak layup.
  • Montclair's Kate Tobie handed out eight assists to lead all players.
