HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 30, 2017) – In the final action for all Stevens Institute of Technology varsity athletics in 2017, the Duck men's basketball team defeated in-state rival Kean University 69-44 on Saturday. The Ducks led from the tip and enjoyed their largest lead at the buzzer in a dominant performance.
Midway through the first period, the Ducks went on a 21-0 run that took the drama out of the proceedings. Eight different players scored for Stevens in the first half.
The Duck defense was stout and forced the Cougars into three separate 30-second shot clock violations in the first period and a 28 percent field-goal percentage over the game.
Spencer Cook and
Kevin Florio led Stevens with 15 and 11 points, respectively, on the strength of three hits from behind the arc each.
Alec DiPietrantonio led the team with six rebounds, added a block and made his only field goal attempt as well.
Jake Krantz and
Thomas Cook scored four points each. Cook also led the team with two blocks.
Stevens led rebounds 42-32, assists 13-7, and forced more turnovers (23-17). But perhaps the biggest margin was bench points, which the Ducks led 42-10. 13 different Ducks scored in the game.
"I thought our defense was good today," said head coach
Bobby Hurley. "We had great energy and effort on that end of the floor and offensively we moved the ball pretty well. I'm happy where we are after our non-conference schedule but now we need to focus on our conference opponents as Elmira comes to town on Tuesday.
Stevens will remain home and open Empire 8 play on Tuesday by hosting Elmira College at 5 p.m. in the first game of the New Year.
