ALFRED, N.Y. (February 10, 2017) – Despite a career-high 18 points from sophomore
Jayson Winick, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team saw its five-game win streak snapped Friday night in the form of a 107-80 loss to Alfred.
The loss dropped Stevens to 17-5 (10-3), while Alfred moved to 9-14 (6-8).
Freshman
Spencer Cook scored 20 to go along with three rebounds, while freshman
JoJo Mosca chipped in with a career high of his own with 12 points. As a team Stevens shot 47 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc.
Alfred started the game with an 8-0 run over the first four minutes, and extended the lead to 13 two minutes later off a 7-0 run. Steven ended the drought with two from the line for Winick to make it 20-9 with 12:10 to go, but five straight from the Saxons grew the deficit to 16.
Stevens cut it to single digits when Winick's layup made it 31-22, then again off a Barron layup and free throws from sophomore
Ryan Coffey with under three to play. Alfred grew its lead back to 13 with just under a minute to go however before two at the line for Stevens made it 48-37 heading into the break.
A 9-0 Alfred run to start the second put the Ducks in their largest hole of the night at 20, but Stevens rallied with an 8-0 run to get to within 12 three minutes in. It's as close as they would get though as Alfred re-built its lead to as much as 30 before maintaining its comfortable margin over the remainder of regulation.
Stevens will look to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon when it heads to Houghton for a 4 p.m. matchup.
