HOUGHTON, N.Y. (February 11, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped its second-straight on the road Saturday, falling 69-67 against Houghton in Empire 8 action.
The loss dropped Stevens to 17-6 (10-4), while Houghton moved to 9-14 (4-10).
Freshman
Spencer Cook poured in a team-high 21 points, while sophomore
Jayson Winick scored 15 with five rebounds. Freshman
JoJo Mosca scored 12 with three boards, and sophomore
Ryan Coffey and freshman
Colin McKenna combined for nine rebounds.
Stevens forced 18 Houghton turnovers, while outscoring the Highlanders bench by three.
An 18-10 run to start the game gave Stevens the early advantage, but Houghton rallied with a 9-2 run of its own to get within one midway through the opening half. Stevens ended the spurt with two at the line from junior
Chris Cosgrove, but the Highlanders responded with six unanswered to gain their first lead of the day.
Stevens regained its lead during the six minute mark after a three from Winick and two at the line from freshman
Dylan Walsh, before S. Cook hit a three in the closing seconds to break a 35-35 deadlock and give the Ducks the lead at the break.
Threes from Mosca and S. Cook to start the second put Stevens in front by seven, before S. Cook's layup with just under 15 ticks left on the clock made it 50-41. Walsh's layup two minutes later gave the Ducks their largest lead of day at 11, but Houghton answered with an 8-2 run to get within five midway through the half.
Houghton continued to keep it close, before pulling in front with 22 seconds remaining off a three from Phil Pellegrino. Stevens turned the ball over on its ensuring possession, allowing the Highlanders to add one more at line with three seconds to go to seal the win.
Stevens will wrap up its regular season next weekend when it hosts St. John Fisher and Nazareth in an E8 weekend.
