HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 17, 2017) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball senior
Evan Klimchak scored a season high 28 points Friday night in a 94-86 overtime loss to St. John Fisher in Hoboken.
The loss dropped Stevens to 17-7 (10-5), while Fisher moved to 19-5 (14-1).
Down three with 17 seconds remaining, Fisher hit one of two at the line and grabbed the offensive board to give it a chance to win. Out of a timeout, Alex Sausville hit a layup to tie the game at 81, before Klimchak's game-winning heave from half court rattled in and out.
The Cardinals quickly built a four-point lead in the extra frame, before a layup with 1:25 left put Stevens in a six-point hole and put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Spencer Cook scored 17 with three rebounds and three assists, while sophomore
Jayson Winick scored 16 with seven boards. Stevens shot 46 percent from the field, and forced 13 Fisher turnovers.
Both sides deadlock at 13 seven minutes into regulation and again at 16, before Fisher reeled off an 8-3 run to go up five with eight minutes remaining. Klimchak ended the spurt with a three, but a Fisher three on the ensuing possession followed by five more unanswered put Stevens in a 10-point hole.
The Ducks kept it close from there, pulling to within two with just over two minutes remaining off a three from S. Cook. The Cardinals were able to respond however, scoring five point in the final 1:23 to take a five-point advantage into the break.
Fisher's lead grew to 11 less than two minutes into the second, but Stevens rallied with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit down to three with 15:40 to go. A jumper from Klimchak three minutes later made it one, before the veteran put Stevens in front with 12:20 remaining on a layup.
The Cardinals would regain the lead shortly after and grow it to eight with just under eight to go, but another Stevens spurt capped by a two at the line from Klimchak put Stevens in front by three with 1:46 left on the clock. It would be the last lead Stevens would enjoy however as Fisher's rally in the closing seconds preceded its overtime win.
Stevens will wrap up its regular season tomorrow when it hosts Nazareth for senior day at 5 p.m.
