No. 2 Men's Volleyball earns split at Elmira UVC Tri-Match

ELMIRA, N.Y. (February 18, 2017)  – Freshman David Lehman totaled 22 kills and sophomore Dylan DeBoer had 19 kills, as the No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team earned a split of the Elmira College United Volleyball Conference Tri-Match, with a victory over the hosts (25-13, 25-21) before falling to No. 8 Vassar College (25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 22-25) Saturday. 

Stevens attacked at a .437 percentage and recorded 12 blocks in sweeping Elmira, however, the Ducks committed 30 attack errors leading to 18 Vassar blocks in the nightcap. With the split, the Ducks closed the day at 11-2 on the season and 1-2 in UVC play. 

Ryan McDonough recorded 17 kills for Elmira ad Matthew Knigge recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 blocks for Vassar. Vassar downed Elmira in the tri-match finale.

Volleys and Points
  • Stevens took control of the opening set against Elmira and used a .565 (14-1-23) to earn the first-set victory.
  • The Ducks cooled off in the second set but used three multi-points runs to open an 11-6 lead.
  • A pair of Elmira attack errors opened a 20-12 lead for the Ducks.
  • Back-to-back kills by senior Gabe Shankweiler closed out the second frame.
  • In the final set, the teams alternated points to 13-13.
  • Elmira opened leads of 15-13 and 17-14 on the strength of three McDonough kills and a pair of Stevens errors.
  • Elmira opened its biggest lead of the match at 20-15 after attack errors by Lehman and DeBoer. The quickly redeem themselves with an ace and a kill to start the Stevens rally.
  • Two kills by Jacob Stillman pulled the Ducks to within a point.
  • Against Vassar, the Ducks jumped out to a 14-7 lead on a Lehman kill and a pair of Vassar errors en route to claiming the first set.
  • In the second set, the Vassar block took over, forcing the Ducks into nine hitting errors.
  • A Shankweiler kill tied the game at nine. The teams alternated points until 18-18, when Vassar went on a 8-0 run to close the second set and tie the match.
  • In the third set, three errors led to a 5-2 lead for Vassar. Stevens would never reclaim the lead or force a tie.
  • The fourth set featured 14 ties. At 18-18, back-to-back kills gave produced a 20-18 lead for Vassar.

Match Point
  • After rallying to come back from a 20-15 deficit, a DeBoer kill and an Elmira attack error closed out the match.
  • Trailing 24-22, Shankweiler was blocked on an attack attempt to close out the fourth set.

Inside the Numbers
  • Senior Alexander Carpenter recorded six blocks and five kills (on eight attacks) in the win over Elmira. 
  • Gabe Shankweiler tallied five aces on the day.
  • Sophomore Jacob Patterson totaled 49 assists without a single set error or ball-handling error.
  • Jacob Stillman and Ian Bennett totaled 10 kills on 13 attacks against Elmira.
  • Lehman recorded his first career double-double against Vassar.
