No. 4 Men’s Volleyball downs Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, to return to win column

Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 22, 2017)  – Sophomore Dylan DeBoer tallied 16 kills and senior Gabe Shankweiler added seven kills and two aces as the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Rutgers-Newark (25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-15), 3-1, Wednesday evening.

The victory improved Stevens to 12-2 on the season. Corey Pieper recorded eight kills for the Scarlet Raiders, who dropped their second straight to fall to 3-9 on the season.

Volleys and Points
  • After a pair of errors by freshman outside hitter David Lehman gave Rutgers-Newark a 2-1 lead in the opening set, the Ducks rallied with 11 consecutive points to take an 11-2 lead.
  • Stevens would go on a 4-0 run to open a 17-4 lead.
  • Rutgers-Newark finally crossed into double figures on a Jacob Patterson serving error.
  • Patterson dished assists to Shankweiler and Jordan Stuart to push the lead to 22-10.
  • DeBoer closed out the first set with a kill and an ace.
  • Stevens had their best attacking set in the second frame, making only one attack error.
  • Seven unanswered points by the Ducks opened a 10-3 lead.
  • Kills by Shankweiler and junior Thomas Burrell closed the set.
  • Back-to-back attack errors opened a 2-0 lead for Rutgers-Newark.
  • Four unanswered points by the Scarlet Raiders opened a 7-3 lead.
  • With Lehman serving, a series of attack errors pulled the Ducks ahead at 9-8.
  • After reclaiming the lead, the Scarlet Raiders held onto the game to force play into the fourth set.
  • The teams alternated brief rallies until 13-13.
  • A pair of Jordan Stuart kills opened a 15-13 lead for the Ducks.
  • Back-to-back RU-N errors pushed the lead to 17-13
