Second-Half Surge Leads Men’s Basketball Past Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (February 3, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team outscored Elmira by 15 in the second half Friday night in an 88-71 Empire 8 road win.

The win moved Stevens to 15-4 (9-2), while Elmira fell to 3-16 (1-9).

Senior Evan Klimchak led all scorers with a season-high 27 points, while sophomore Ryan Coffey scored 14 with four rebounds. Freshmen Spencer Cook and Dylan Walsh combined for 15 points, in addition to a team high six rebounds for Cook.

Stevens shot 54 percent from the field and 47 percent from three, while on the boards the Ducks outrebounded the Soaring Eagles 31-26.

A 12-2 run to start the night put Stevens in a 10-point hole three minutes in, before a 14-1 Ducks run capped by two at the line put Stevens in front 19-18 with 11:07 left on the clock. Elmira regained the lead on its next possession and held it over the next six minutes, but Stevens stayed within two until a pair of Klimchak free throws put the Ducks back ahead by two with less than six to play.

Klimchak extended the lead to five four minutes later off a layup, but a 5-2 Elmira spurt to close the half cut Stevens' lead to two heading into the break.

Stevens quickly made the lead eight with threes on its first two possessions of the second, before two from the line from Klimchak made it 11 less than three minutes into the second. Elmira responded with six unanswered to get within five, but a three from Coffey followed by a layup from Cook brought the lead back to double digits.

The Ducks held at least a six-point advantage over the next six minute, before a layup from sophomore Jayson Winick brought the lead to 13 with under eight to play.

Winick made it 14 one minute later off a three, followed by one from Kilmchak from beyond the arc to make it 77-57 with 3:55 left on the clock. Stevens crusied from there, never allowing Elmira to get closer than 16 over the final six minutes to clinch the blowout win.

Stevens will continue its road stand tomorrow afternoon with a 4 p.m. matchup at Ithaca.
