Baseball Drops Spring Break Trip finale to MIT

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 17, 2017)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team allowed 11 runs in the first three innings and fell to Massachusetts Institute of Technology 14-0 Friday afternoon at Hermance Stadium at Oglethorpe University in a non-conference, neutral-site matchup.

The Engineers (2-1) jumped on starter Ryan Larsen and the Ducks (4-8-1) from the game's first batter. The right-hander walked Jared Schwait to lead off the game. Schwait moved to second on Garrett Greenwood's bunt single. With Austin Filiere at the plate, Schwait broke for third, but catcher A.J. Falconite's throw was off the mark, allowing the leadoff hitter to score and Greenwood to advance to third. John Drago lifted a sacrifice fly to left and Michael Falcon threw out Filiere trying to advance to complete the double play. Larsen struck out Matt Johnston to end the inning.

MIT exploded for sevens in the second as nine consecutive batters reached against relievers Zeph Walters and Michael Frissora to start the inning. The Engineers added two runs in the third and two more in the seventh. They scored one last run in the eighth on Thomas Allison's second home run of the game as the Ducks struggled at the plate for the second game in a row. Stevens didn't record its first hit until Shaye Bartnick's fourth-inning  double - one of four hits on the afternoon (the others came from Walters, Patrick Rood and Eric Zickert). Stevens arrived in Georgia averaging just under five runs per game over its previous seven contests.

"We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our fans, especially our parents, who provided us with support throughout this trip," head coach Kristaps Aldins said. "They were great each and every day."

"[Shaye] Bartnick continues to swing a steady bat [for us]," Aldins added. "He is producing quality at-bats."

Making his first career start, Larsen (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in one inning of work.
In just his third career appearance on the mound, Drew Hanke threw two shutout innings of relief to extend his scoreless-inning streak to five. The junior appeared in 20 games behind the plate over his first two seasons on Castle Point.

Patrick Callahan (1-0) earned the win in his first appearance of the season, scattering three hits over five innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked one.

Up Next: The Ducks return to the friendly confines of Dobbelaar Field for a non-conference game against SUNY-New Paltz on Sunday, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
