No. 3 Men’s Volleyball splits Carthage Tri-Match

KENOSHA, Wis. (March 25, 2017)  – Freshman David Lehman totaled 20 kills and added nine kills and five blocks as No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated Wittenberg University 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-22) and fell to No. 7 Carthage College (25-18, 25-27, 25-23, 25-13) Saturday in a non-conference tri-match.

Gabe Shankweiler notched 13 kills to move closer to 1,000 career kills, The Allentown, Pennsylvania native has 977 for his career.  

Carthage and Wittenberg did not meet in the non-traditional tri-match format. The teams met in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play on March. 17. Wittenberg fell to 10-15 and Carthage moved to 18-1. The Reds have won 17 straight matches. 

Volleys and Points (Wittenberg)
  • In the opening match, an attack error by Wittenberg's Dylan Kolovitz gave Stevens the opening set's first point.
  • Three attack errors and a Thomas Burrell kill gave the Ducks a 5-3 lead.
  • The teams exchanged points until Stevens took control of the set with Jordan Stuart at the serve. Stuart's serves resulted in an attack error and an ace for a 13-8 edge.
  • Stevens reeled off five straight points (kills by Shankweiler, Burrell and Lehman and two block assists) to lead 18-9.
  • Wittenberg closed to within 22-15 on a Stevens attack error. 
  • The Ducks closed the first set on two Wittenberg errors that surrounded another Stuart kill.
  • Stevens opened the second set with a Lehman kill and a block assist by Alexander Carpenter and Joshua Hinton to grab an early 2-1 advantage.
  • Ashton Sellers recorded an ace for Wittenberg to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
  • Stevens took control of the set on a pair of block assists and kills from Hinton and Carpenter to take a 9-6 lead.
  • Three consecutive errors gave Stevens a 14-8 advantage.
  • The teams again alternated points until back-to-back attack errors gave Stevens a 23-16 lead.
  • Carpenter closed the second set with a kill and an ace to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Tigers began the opening match's final set by scoring four of the first five points to take a 4-1 lead.
  • A four-point run gave Wittenberg a 9-3 lead - it was the Tigers' largest lead of the afternoon.
  • After a timeout, the Ducks rallied, scoring five of the next six points. Kills from Ian Bennett and Dylan DeBoer began the run and a DeBoer block closed it.
  • A Carpenter kill sparked a three-point run for the Ducks that tied the game at 11.
  • A Burrell kill gave Stevens a 15-14 lead. Wittenberg would not be able to force another tie.

Volleys and Points (Carthage)
  • A back-and-forth affair in the opening set, the teams were tied on six different occasions and as late as 18-18.
  • Carthage scored the opening set's final seven points on three kills by Marc Hansen and four Stevens errors.
  • The second set began like the first, with the teams alternating points and neither team holding more than a three-point lead.
  • Carthage fought off two Stevens set-points after the Ducks inched ahead (24-22) on a Stuart kill. 
  • A Lehman kill again gave the Ducks a set point but a Griffin Shields kill again drew the teams even.
  • Shankweiler's third kill of the set gave Stevens its third set point and a ball handling error by Zach Lillig gave Stevens the second set a pulled the match even.
  • Carthage earned the first two points of the third set but the Ducks rebounded to pull ahead 4-3, taking advantage of a Carthage error.
  • The teams would continue the back-and-forth style of the previous sets with nine ties.
  • Shankweiler spurred a four-point run with a pair of kills that opened a 10-8 lead for Stevens.
  • Carthage would battle back on two kills and an ace to even the game at 15.
  • The turning point of the set came when three DeBoer attack errors gave Carthage a 22-20 edge. 
  • The Ducks would fight off a set point at 24-22 on a DeBoer kill, but Carthage finished off the third set on a Shields kill.
  • Facing a must-win situation, the Ducks jumped out in front in the final set on a Carthage service error.
  • The serve quickly returned to Carthage and the Reds scored three straight points to grab a 3-1 lead.
  • Unlike the previous three sets, the Carthage block took over at the net, blocking four Stevens attack as part of a 9-1 run that saw the Reds take a 13-4 lead.
  • Carthage would record four additional blocks over the remainder of the match, as the Ducks     couldn't draw any closer than 16-9.

Match Points
  • A Dylan Kolovitz service error closed out the Wittenberg match.
  • A block assist by Matt Reinsel and Zach Lillig on a Shankweiler attack closed the Carthage match.

Inside the Numbers (Wittenberg)
  • The Ducks attacked at a .316 (10-4-19) percentage in the first set.
  • Stevens forced the Tigers into a negative attack percentage over the first two sets.
  • The Ducks won the second set with only six kills, taking advantage of 10 Wittenberg attack errors, six service errors and a pair of set errors.  
  • Stevens held the edge in aces, blocks and digs, but Wittenberg held a 28-27 advantage in kills.
  • Thomas Burrell recorded five kills on seven attacks (.429 percentage) and Alexander Carpenter added four kills on six attacks (.667) for the highest attack percentage of the match.
  • The win extended the Stevens winning streak to 12 games.

Inside the Numbers (Carthage)
  • Stevens attacked at a -.217 (6-11-23) percentage in the third set. It was the lowest mark of the season.
  • The .093 attack percentage for the match was the second lowest number of the season.
  • Stevens' 30 attack errors matched a season high.
  • Sophomore Jacob Patterson recorded 37 assists. It was the 16th match with more than 30 assists for the setter.
  • Stevens was outblocked 12-4. Carthage's 12 blocks is the second highest total by a Stevens opponent this season. 
  • Shankweiler, Stuart and DeBoer recorded service aces for the Ducks as Stevens held a 5-3 advantage.
