ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 22, 2017) – Fifteen different Ducks registered a goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team built a 12-0 first quarter lead en route to a 20-1 victory over Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Saturday.
Tom Lawson had a goal and five assists to lead all players as Stevens moved to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The victory clinched first place in the conference for Stevens and assured the Ducks home field advantage in the Empire 8 Championships. The 7-0 mark in conference play is the best record for the program in 10 years.
Sophomore
Max Bailey tallied a goal and three assists in the victory. Junior
Bryan Rogers set a career-high with three goals and junior
Tommy Dawson also had three goals. Freshman
Max Ranaldi and senior
Ryan Giordano each had a goal and an assist and freshman
Kyle Skurchak set a new career-high with two goals. A goal each from
Tim Leahey, Nick Mara,
Eric Radbourne,
Jake Gargiulo,
Connor McKeon,
John Boutureira,
Sam Quick and
Kevin Louie rounded out the Stevens scoring.
Anthony LoRusso recorded the lone goal for Elmira.
Defensively, senior
Scott Smullen led all players with three caused turnovers as the Ducks forced 11 Elmira turnovers. Junior
Scott Wedgeworth went 8-of-10 in the faceoff circle and picked up five ground balls. The Ducks went 20-5 in the circle and held a 49-25 edge in ground balls.
Stevens outshot Elmira, 48-15, including 23-2 in the opening quarter. Stevens was 15-for-19 on clear attempts, while Elmira went 8-of-19.
Freshman
Jack Braswell played 39:10 to earn his first career victory. Cameron Prior made five saves over 7:07 in net to suffer the loss.
Tommy Dawson opened scoring just 56 seconds into the game and before the quarter was over, Stevens built a 12-0 lead. Boutureira and Radbourne scored thirty seconds apart to open a 3-0 lead.
Kevin Louie pushed the lead to four, before back-to-back goals by Dawson gave Stevens a 6-0 advantage before the game was six minutes old.
Max Bailey notched his 13th of the year to make it 7-0 and goals from Leahey, McKeon Skurchak (2) and Rogers gave Stevens a 12-0 advantage. The 12-goal period was the highest single-quarter output of the season. Rogers would record his second of the game with a man advantage and Gargiulo added his second of the year to give the Ducks a 14-0 lead at the intermission.
Ranaldi netted his second of the game to open second-half scoring and would be followed by Marra's second goal of the year. LoRusso netted his 15th of the year to briefly slow down the Stevens attack, but
Sam Quick added his second of the year to send Stevens into the fourth quarter with a 17-1 edge.
Fourth-quarter tallies from Rogers, Giordano and Lawson closed out the scoring.
Up next: The Ducks close out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a matchup with nationally-ranked Stevenson at De Baun Athletic Complex Tuesday evening.
