Nine-goal first leads Men’s Lacrosse to victory over Houghton

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 8, 2017)  – Thirteen Ducks registered a goal as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team scored nine goals in the first quarter in routing Houghton College, 20-0 Saturday.

It was the third consecutive victory for the Ducks over the Highlanders, with all three wins coming by 20 goals or more.

Senior Ryan Giordano led all players with four goals and two assists as the Ducks moved to 8-3 on the year and 3-0 in Empire 8 play. Sophomore Max Bailey had three assists and Brendan Monteleone, Tommy Dawson, Scott Smullen, and Max Rinaldi each had two goals. Dean Peluso, Nick Marra and Kyle Skurchak had a goal and an assist and Tom Lawson had two assists. Tim Leahey, Eric Radbourne, Jake Gargiulo, Sam Quick and Connor McKeon added one goal each, and John Boutureira and Nicholas Polich each had an assist to round out the Stevens scoring. It was the first collegiate goals for Quick, Marra and Smullen.

Jorge Medina made 11 saves for the Highlanders, who fell to 1-10 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

"It was great to get another conference win today," head coach Gene Peluso said. "We had three first career goal scorers in Sam Quick, Nick Marra, Scott Smullen. We were also happy to see former attackman, Roy Standing, play in goal for the first time in his college career. He made a great save late to secure the shutout.  We got a great game from Ryan Giordano who not only scored points early in the first half, but both his and Bryan Rogers' leadership on offense was excellent. We played every healthy player on the roster and I thought the players showed great discipline on defense and great discipline and control on offense."

Defensively, eight different Ducks caused turnovers as Stevens held an 8-2 edge in caused turnovers. Nicholas Carnovale led all players with six ground balls and Connor Murphy and Scott Wedgeworth each picked up five as the Ducks held a 44-9 edge. Murphy and Wedgeworth each went 6-for-6 in the faceoff circle, and Carnovale and sophomore Nicholas Carnovale each only lost once in the circle as Stevens won 22 of 24 faceoffs. 

Stevens outshot Houghton 42-9 and were a perfect 8-for-8 on clear attempts, while holding the Highlanders to 4-of-13.

Carson White earned the victory for Stevens, while Jack Braswell and Roy Standing also saw time in net. 

Monteleone's marker just 42 seconds into the game opened the scoring. Dean Peluso doubled the advantage and Dawson followed with a pair of goals to give the Ducks a four-goal lead midway through the first quarter. Stevens would score five more times in the opening stanza as the Ducks built a 9-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Max Ranaldi opened the second-quarter scoring and goals from Marra, McKeon and two from Giordano grew the lead to 14-0 at the intermission. Gargiulo's goal opened second-half scoring and Giordano and Ranaldi added goals to give Stevens an 18-0 lead. Smullen scored twice in the fourth quarter and Quick added his first career goal to close the scoring. 

Up next: The Ducks return to the De Baun Athletic Complex for the first of three straight Empire 8 contests. Hartwick is first up on the schedule for a Wednesday afternoon matchup.
