Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 12, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team moved to 4-0 in Empire 8 Conference play for the first time since 2013 with a 12-7 victory over Hartwick College Wednesday afternoon.
Senior
Connor McKeon tallied three goals and an assist for the Ducks, who scored seven unanswered goals to break the game open in the second quarter. Stevens improved to 9-3 on the year. The Ducks have won ten straight games over the Hawks.
Sophomore
Max Bailey added two goals and two assists to match McKeon's four-point effort. Juniors
Tommy Dawson and
John Boutureira each had two goals. Freshman
Brendan Monteleone recorded a goal and an assist. Senior
Connor Towne and sophomore
Dean Peluso each had one goal and freshman Alec Casiero rounded out the Stevens scoring with one assist.
Jake Sachse led Hartwick with two goals and two assists. The Hawks fell to 6-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
"We were really excited about the play from
Alec Caseiro," head coach
Gene Peluso said. "He did everything for us and got us going on defense, offense and [on] faceoffs."
Defensively, Casiero lead all players with four caused turnovers, helping Stevens gain a 7-6 advantage. The freshman also topped all players with eight ground balls as Stevens had a 34-32 edge. Casiero also went 5-for-7 in the faceoff circle.
Hartwick outshot Stevens 38-36, including 21-15 in the second half. Stevens was 18-for-19 on clear attempts, while Hartwick was 15-of-19.
Carson White earned the victory for Stevens, making 11 saves.
"I thought
Carson White made some great saves today," Peluso added.
Cordell Armstrong opened the game's scoring, beating White to give Hartwick its only lead of the game. The Ducks responded with seven consecutive goals over the next period and a half to take a 7-1 lead. Bailey's 10th goal of the season started the run and was followed by goals from Dawson, Boutureira, Monteleone, Towne, and two from McKeon. Hartwick finally stopped the run on Sachse's first of the game with 1:43 remaining. Dawson put the momentum back on the Stevens side of the field when Dawson beat Connor O'Brien just seconds before halftime to give the Ducks an 8-2 lead.
Dean Peluso and Boutureira scored back-to-back goals coming out of the intermission to push the lead to 10-2, before Hartwick netted three straight goals to cut the Stevens lead in half. McKeon scored his third of the game to regain an 11-5 lead for the Ducks. Brett Maguire and Sasche added late goals for the Hawks to pull Hartwick within four, but
Max Bailey scored with just under five minutes remaining to produce the final margin.
Up next: Stevens continues its three-game homestand with a conference matchup with St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon. The Ducks will honor the men's lacrosse Class of 2017 in a pre-game ceremony.
"Hartwick played smart lacrosse today, and they are a good team," Peluso reflected. "We are happy to win the game, but need to prepare for the next opponent."
