Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Charles O'Brien

Dynamic start sends Men’s Soccer to 5-2 victory over Kean

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 1, 2017)  – Freshman Kevin Brito netted the first two goals of his collegiate career before the fifth minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team jumped out to an early three-goal lead, and opened the 2017 campaign with a 5-2 victory over Kean University Friday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Junior Chris Cesario also recorded a pair of goals, including the successful conversion of a penalty kick in the 88th minute. It was the second season-opening victory for the Ducks in the last three seasons.

Jorge Castro and Matt Kerr scored for Kean, who fell to 0-1.

Turning Point
  • After an uneventful opening two minutes, Brito and Abdelhady paired up for the first two goals of the season on nearly identical plays.
  • The goals, scored 1:01 apart gave the Ducks an early 2-0 edge that the team never relinquished.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks held a 17-12 advantage in shots.
  • Kean held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
  • Junior Haddy Abdelhady led all players with three assists, marking a new career high.
  • Cesario's two tallies marked his second-career multi-point performance.
  • Although successful in the early portion of a difficult 2016 schedule, tonight's five-goal output match the team's total over the first six games last season.

Unsung Heroes
  • After Kean pulled to within two goals, the Stevens defensive corps took the game over, keeping the Cougars off the scoresheet over the next 30 minutes, allowing the offense to reclaim a three-goal lead on Cesario's first goal.
