Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Charles O'Brien

Men’s Soccer falls to No. 14 SUNY Oneonta, 2-0

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 3, 2017)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped the second of its two opening-weekend contests, falling to No. 14 SUNY Oneonta Sunday at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Oneonta's Roberto Ventura opened the scoring, converting a first-half penalty kick. The nationally-ranked Red Dragons increased their lead six minutes later when Austin Hughes scored on a nifty crossing shot from the left corner of the 18-yard box. The two-goal cushion would stand as Nicholas Giordano made a career-high nine saves for his second straight clean sheet. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0.

Aaron Henry stopped three shots for the Ducks, who dropped to 1-1. It was Oneonta's first victory in three tries against Stevens. The teams last met in 2007.

After the two early markers, a steady, driving rain prevented either team from establishing any offensive consistency. Once the rain cleared as play resumed in the second half, a red card was issued to Roberto Ventura for a dangerous play. The ensuing ejection was a momentum-changer for the Ducks, who immediately seized control of the play, keeping the ball in the offensive zone. However, despite playing a man up, and connecting for 12 shots over the final 36 minutes, Stevens was unable to find the back of the net.

Turning Point
  • Ventura was awarded a penalty shot in the 16th minute.
  • After getting set, the freshman midfielder directed his plant leg towards the inside post, forcing Henry to dive to his left.
  • Ventura shifted his weight and placed the ball into the opposite corner for his second goal of the year.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 22-11 advantage in shots, and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The edge was far more decisive after Ventura's red card, as the Ducks fired five shots on goal over the final 36 minutes. Oneonta did not register a shot on goal after the midfielder's departure.
  • The Ducks held a 9-7 edge in corner kicks.
  • Freshman Kevin Brito matched Oneonta's Jorge Hernandez with a game-high four shots. Hernandez totaled a match-high three shots on goal.

Unsung Heroes
  • The Stevens defensive corps kept 2016 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Witman Hernandez in check, holding the high-scoring forward to a single shot. Hernandez tallied 11 markers in his freshman season and scored a natural hat-trick in Oneonta's season-opening victory over Manhattanville.

From the Sidelines
  • "Tough loss. We paid the price for a poor start against a top-quality team."
  • "We created so many chances in the second half, but we needed to be more ruthless in front of the goal."
  • "Looking forward now to Wednesday night as we take on another top NJAC team in TCNJ."

Up Next
  • A fixture with in-state rival, The College of New Jersey is up next for the Ducks.
  • Stevens has earned a victory in two of the last three matchups, including a 3-1 victory in Hoboken last season.
