Boylan’s header is the difference as Men’s Soccer edges Fisher

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 16, 2017)  – Senior Patrick Boylan's headed in freshman Kevin Brito's corner kick in the 17th minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team edged St. John Fisher College 1-0, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference matchup. The game was a rematch of last season's conference semifinal, won by St. John Fisher on penalty kicks, and opened league play for both teams.

A motivated Stevens came out firing from the opening whistle, registering six shots, including senior Tommy Dorsay's strike that rang off the post, in the first 15 minutes. Conversely, the standout defensive corps didn't allow St. John Fisher to get into any offensive rhythm, allowing just six shots on the afternoon.

Junior Aaron Henry saved a pair of shots for the fourth clean sheet of his career. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Ducks, who improved to 4-3.

Joe Catalfamo made seven saves for St. John Fisher, who suffered its first loss of the season. The Cardinals are 3-1-3.

Pivotal Point
  • After earning their second corner of the match, Brito struck a high, line drive that drifted in front of the box. Boylan rose above the pack and connected with the ball, placing it beyond Catalfamo's reach.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens fired 19 shots, including eight on goal. The Ducks fired 11 shots in the first half and eight in the second.
  • The Ducks held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • 2016 Empire 8 Championship Most Valuable Player Matthew Kaiser did not play for Fisher.
  • Freshman Cristiano Hocken took a match-high five shots, while junior Daniel Aversano led all players with two shots on goal.
  • Boylan's goal was the second of his career. His previous marker came against Swarthmore on Sept. 23, 2015.

Unsung Heroes
  • "Aversano was a constant attacking threat for Stevens and caused Fisher a lot of problems."
  • "Defensively, Boylan was extremely solid and commanded the back four very well."

From the Sidelines
  • "Good start to our E8 campaign against the reigning champions."
  • "We created a lot of chances that we failed to convert. But it's extremely positive to be creating them."
  • "We now get a full week to prepare for a tough game away from home against Alfred."

Up Next
  • The Ducks hit the road for a pair of games, taking on Empire 8 foe Alfred (Sept. 23) and Widener (Sept. 27).
