Men’s Soccer plays Alfred to draw

ALFRED, N.Y. (September 23, 2017)  – Freshman Matthew Hammons headed in Andrew Masur's free kick in the 30th minute as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Alfred University Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

A tight Stevens defense made Hammons' goal stand for nearly 30 minutes, until Alfred's Evan Merkey pushed a loose ball past junior Aaron Henry to knot the score. Henry deflected Alexander Tostanoski's try, but the Fayetteville, Arkansas native was unable to make a second save to preserve the lead.

Playing with a man-advantage after Reyes' ejection, Stevens fired eight shots after Alfred's equalizer, but was unable to find the back of the net. Chris Gutierrez made six saves for the Saxons, who moved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Empire 8 play.

Henry made four saves for the Ducks, who fell to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in league play. It was the second overtime game of the season for Stevens. The Ducks are tied with the Saxons atop the Empire 8 standings.
