HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 21, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology department of athletics will induct five new members into its Hall of Fame Class of 2017 next Saturday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. inside DeBaun Auditorium. Five Ducks will join the ranks of the immortals as part of Athletics Alumni Day: Kara Brozillo ('10, '12), Mark Cardillo '64, Salme Cook ('09, '11), Christine Smith ('11,'12) and J.R. Maehler '09.

Kara Borzillo '10, '12
Borzillo was a standout for both the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams at Stevens. The most prolific scorer in Stevens field hockey history, at the time of her graduation she was the Ducks' all-time leader in goals (52), assists (25), and points (129). At graduation, she also held the program's single-season records with 19 goals, 48 points and 2.09 points per game, all set in 2008.

She was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American in 2009, an NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star, four-year all-conference selection and the 2009 Empire 8 Player of the Year.

For the women's lacrosse program, she was a four-year starter and selected for the 2010 North/South All-Star Game as a senior.

Mark Cardillo '64
Cardillo, a member of the men's fencing program, was one of the most talented sabreists to stalk the strips of Castle Point. Cardillo won back-to-back Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association Sabre Championships in 1963 and 1964. He is one of just four Stevens men to ever capture that title. He also won three Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association medals, including consecutive gold medals in 1963 and 1964. His count of three medals have never bested by a Stevens fencer and his two golds are still the standard of the program.

At the 1964 NCAA National Championships held at Harvard, Cardillo placed 14th in the country to cap his senior season. It is still the highest any Duck sabre fencer has ever finished on the national stage.

Salme Cook '09, '11
Cook was a force on both the track and soccer pitch for the Ducks. For the soccer squad, she scored 23 goals to put her eighth on the all-time list for scoring, despite playing the bulk of her career on the defensive line. She was a four-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Selection, four-time first-team all-conference pick, the conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

On the track, she helped begin the most successful stretch in program history by being the first Stevens athlete, male or female, to compete in the NCAA Track & Field Championships by posting a qualifying time in the outdoor 800 meters in 2010. At the time of her induction, she still holds the 800-meter outdoor school-record and the 500-, 600- and 800-meter indoor school records, plus three additional relay standards. She also retired holding the 400-meter outdoor record and was a five-time first-team all-conference selection in track.

Christine Smith '11, '12
Smith played a year of soccer at Stevens but is more renowned for her outstanding four-year lacrosse career for the Ducks. She was a three-time Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-American selection and the program's all-time leader in draw controls with 300. To date, only two other players have notched more than 200 career draws in program history.

She also ranks in the career Top-5 in six other columns in the record book, and according to coach Celine Cunningham, who has led the program for 15 of its 17 seasons, "she is hands-down the most humble, impactful player I have ever coached. Her dominance on the draw was a key reason we had so much success during her career."

Smith was a First-Team IWLCA All-Boardwalk Region selection in all four years of her lacrosse career, played in the 2011 North/South All-Star Game and helped lead the team to a .812 winning percentage in her four years with the program.

J.R. Maehler '09
Maehler is a unique case; he was elected and eligible to be inducted in 2016 but unable to attend the ceremony, so he will be fully honored alongside this year's class. Maehler cemented his name in the long history of Stevens lacrosse as one of the best attackers in Castle Point history. Maehler's 2007 campaign saw him score 55 goals with 45 assists, making it one of the top seasons in the history of the program. It is the only time a Duck has broken the 100-point barrier in a season to date, while his 5.56 points per game is good for third all-time.

Maehler is first all-time in assists and points and third in goals, while his 6.67 shots per game is good for sixth. Maehler was also named United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American three times, in addition to three all-conference awards and the Player of the Year award in 2007.

The Stevens Hall of Fame Class of 2017 will be inducted during an on-campus ceremony at DeBaun Auditorium on September 30 beginning at 7 p.m. The ceremony will be available to watch live via the Stevens Athletics Faceook Page.
