HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 11, 2018) – Seniors
Megan Brown and
Sydney Darby combined for 22 points but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team was unable to maintain a blistering start and fell to The Sage Colleges 66-55 in Empire 8 Conference action Thursday at Canavan Arena.
Freshman
Christina Li added 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds and classmate
Maddi Hahn contributed 10 points off the bench for the Ducks, who fell to 6-7 on the season and 3-2 in the E8.
Emily Parslow recorded a game-high 17 points and Kaitlyn Bowman added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Sage, who won its fifth straight game to improve to 9-3 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Sage's victory came in the programs first-ever meeting as Empire 8 opponents.
Turning Point
- After chipping away at Stevens' early advantage, Sage closed to within a basket at 30-28 after a Macie Holmes triple.
- The Ducks pushed the lead back to eight on back-to-back threes from Darby and Li.
- After Lily Taeuber missed a long three, Parslow corralled the rebound, raced up the near sideline and connected on a 30-foot shot to pull the guests within five after two quarters. The referees discussed the buzzer-beating play for about 15 seconds before counting the desperation heave.
- Sage would come out of halftime and score the opening basket of the third quarter for a five-point swing, trimming the Stevens lead to a single possession.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens shot 11-for-19 from the field, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc, in building a 16-point lead in the first quarter. The Ducks converted two of their first three shot attempts, included back-to-back layups by Li and Annetta Panayides and Darby made both of her three-point attempts.
- Sage outrebounded the Ducks, 46-41, including a 14-12 on the offensive glass. The edge on the boards led to a 13-12 advantage in second-chance points.
- Stevens had the edge in fast-break points (4-3), points in the paint (24-20), points off turnovers (11-8) and bench points (14-9).
- Brown led the team with four assists.
- The Ducks held Sage's leading scorer, Genevieve Schoff to seven points on 2-of-8 shooting.
- The setback was the second straight for Stevens, who had not dropped consecutive conference games since falling to St. John Fisher College and Hartwick College, on January 11 and 14 in 2014.
From the Court
- "I think we saw glimpses of who we can be tonight, but need to maintain that for all 40 minutes."
- "We are still coming together as a team. Our best play is still ahead of us."
