Men’s Basketball Victorious in Triple-Overtime Thriller

ONEONETA, N.Y. (January 13, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team kept its perfect Empire 8 record intact by surviving an intense triple overtime matchup with Hartwick College on Saturday. The Ducks and Hawks combined for 19 ties and 22 lead changes in the instant classic.

Sophomore Spencer Cook finished with a game-high 33 points on 13-22 shooting, five hits from downtown plus six assists. Jayson Winick added 20 points and came up with what turned out to be the game-winning steal. The two Ducks combined to score 27 of Stevens' 33 overtime points.

In the first extra session, Cook splashed a three-pointer to kick off the third period for Stevens, but Hartwick answered with a trey of their own on the first possession and then a layup to take a two-point lead. Winick then took the rock and drove the lane, knotting the game with a lefty layup.

The Hawks went up by three again, but back-to-back offensive rebounds set up runner by Dylan Walsh that cut the lead back down to one.

On the next scoring trip, Thomas Cook hit a free throw to square the contest with one minute remaining. The Hawks got a layup on their next drive, but Spencer Cook tied it again to send the game to a second overtime

Cook earned the first Stevens points in double OT as well, knotting the game with 2:30 to go, then he came down and drilled a three to put the Ducks ahead. But Hartwick's Brandon LaForest hit an incredible three at the buzzer to send the game to triple OT.

In the third overtime, Winick nailed a three in the corner to put the Ducks up by one and over the century mark. After Hartwick answered, Spencer Cook came back with a Duck layup to put the Ducks back up. The Hawks retorted with a three, but Winick answered with a layup to knot the game again.

Finally, Spencer Cook hit a runner in the lane with 18 seconds to go to put Stevens up two, then Winick came up with a huge steal to seal the game for the Ducks.

  • Kevin Townes led Hartwick with 23 points
  • Stevens out-rebounded the Hawks 63-53
  • The Ducks are now 12-3 on the year and 6-0 in the Empire 8

Coach's Corner

"Both teams played really hard tonight. It was an exciting game but I'm happy for our guys as they gutted this one out," said head coach Bobby Hurley. "We completed a busy stretch of our schedule, so it is going to be nice to have multiple days of practices leading up to next week's games against Naz and Fisher."
