HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 19, 2018) – Nazareth College topped the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team 96-89 on Friday night in a matchup with first-place in the Empire 8 on the line. Both teams came into the contest unbeaten in the league, and the Ducks were riding a 10-game winning streak.
Jayson Winick exploded for a career-best 38 points for Stevens, topping the team's previous season-best individual performance (33 by
Spencer Cook the taem's last time out at Hartwick) by five points.
Nazareth was shooting at a 75 percent clip for much of the first half and built their lead as high as 12 at 48-36. But the Ducks closed the half on a 5-0 run to cut their halftime deficit to seven.
Michael Zignorski had a putback at the buzzer for Stevens' final two points of the period, while Winick led the team with 11 first-half points, including a stirring and-1 that had the season's largest Canavan Arena crowd jumping.
Both teams scored 48 points in the second half, leaving the Ducks trailing again by seven at the buzzer. The Ducks cut the lead as close as three points when Winick made two free throws with 2:03 remaining.
But Naz kicked off a 6-0 run by Naz, ending any hope of a Duck comeback.
- Tyler Stenglein finished with 35 points in 37 minutes for Naz
- Stevens out-rebounded the Flyers 38-34, led points in the paint 44-38, and 20-8 second-chance points
- The Ducks bench outscored Naz 35-29
- Alec DiPietrantonio scored 13 points in 11 minutes and added seven rebounds.
- He, Michael Zignorski, Dylan Walsh, and Spencer Cook were all perfect from the line, a total of 14-14
Stevens will have a quick turnaround and host St. John Fisher College at 3 p.m. on Saturday in another Empire 8 matchup.
