Winter’s Triple sends Women’s Basketball over Nazareth

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 19, 2018)  – Freshman Sam Winter sank a go-ahead three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining in regulation to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 55-49, come-from-behind, victory over Nazareth College Friday night in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior forward Megan Brown recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a game high 19 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Ducks. The victory improved Stevens to 8-8 on the year and 5-2 in E8 play. The Ducks improved to 21-1 all-time against the Golden Flyers.

Sophomore forward Rachel Benedict led Nazareth with 10 points and four rebounds before fouling out. Nazareth led by as many as six points in the third quarter before Stevens rallied to tie the score at 36 on Maddi Hahn's three-pointer.

Turning Point
  • Lizzie Straub's free throw handed Nazareth a 46-45 lead with 3:58 to play. The one-point advantage was Nazareth's second lead of the final quarter.
  • Brown's third rebound of the quarter gave Stevens a chance to reclaim the lead.
  • Moving quickly into the front court, excellent ball movement led to Winter having the ball in her hands with space from the Nazareth zone. The Olney, Maryland native calmly converted the open three to put Stevens in front 48-46 and forced a Nazareth timeout.
  • Stevens would hold onto the lead over the final 2:03 to earn the victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Brown's double-double was the 25th of her career. The Laurel, Maryland native continues to close in on 1,000 career points. Tonight's effort pulled the senior to 937 career points.
  • Freshman Lily Taeuber recorded six points, four rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist in her first career start.
  • Nazareth scored its nine first-quarter points on three, three-point field goals. The teams combined to score 15 of the opening stanza's 24 points from behind the arc. The Golden Flyers didn't register their first non-three-point field goal until 2:08 into the second quarter.
  • Saddled with first-half foul trouble, Samantha Peebles, the Empire 8's leading scorer didn't register her first field goal until two minutes into the third quarter. Coming into the game averaging 20.2 points per game, Peebles finished with a season-low nine points.
  • The Ducks held a 40-34 edge on the boards, including a 17-10 advantage on the offensive glass. The rebounding margin led to a 13-6 edge for Stevens in second-chance points.
  • Freshman Christina Li finished with a game-high three assists. Li also drained a three-pointer as time expired at the end of the first quarter.
  • After a slow start, Stevens shot 12-of-29 from the field in the second half to finish the game with a 34 percent shooting percentage.
  • Tonight's victory was Stevens' 10th straight over Nazareth.
