ALBANY, N.Y. (January 23, 2018) –
Ryan Coffey's three-pointer in overtime touched off a 12-0 run in the extra period that allowed the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team to finally put away a pesky squad from the Sage Colleges in Empire 8 action on Tuesday night. Stevens trailed by seven at halftime and by as many as 10 over the course of the game.
Sage had tied the score with less than 0.8 seconds left in regulation as junior center Kevin Lenehan converted a layup to sent the game to extra play with the score tied at 64. The Gators' Anthony Mitchell then scored the first bucket of the extra session to give Sage the lead.
On the ensuing possession,
Michael Zignorski found Coffey for the three with ultimately gave the Ducks the lead for good.
Jayson Winick extended the advantage with a pair of free throws, and
Dylan Walsh,
Thomas Cook and
Spencer Cook all scored in the rally that turned the tense game into a runaway. The 10-point cushion at the end of that stretch was the largest lead of the night for the Ducks.
Spencer Cook and Coffey had five points apiece for Stevens in the extra time.
Cook totaled 20 points, while Coffey had 15 points for Stevens as four players finished in double-digit scoring. Senior forward
Thomas Cook added 11 points with eight rebounds, while junior
Jayson Winick added 10 points with five boards, two assists, and three steals.
Stevens made 20-of-29 shots from the line and had a 50-40 edge on the boards.
Jake Krantz paced Stevens with nine rebounds, including five off the offensive glass.
It is the second-straight time the Gators have given the Ducks a run for their money. The last time the teams met, Stevens scratched out a one-point victory on January 11 in Hoboken.
"Both teams came out with enthusiasm and energy on the defensive end of the floor tonight," said head coach
Bobby Hurley. "We had several different guys step up in a timely fashion, making plays at pivotal points of the game. It's exciting to have so many guys that can step up to make a play on any given night, and our guys came through again to earn a good conference road win."
Stevens is in action next on January 27 hosting Hartwick College in a 2 p.m. Empire 8 contest.
