Women’s Basketball clamps down on Houghton in 62-56 victory

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (January 5, 2018)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball effort turned in one of its best defensive efforts of the season, holding Houghton College to one point in the second quarter en route to a 62-56 victory Friday night in Empire 8 Conference play.

Senior Megan Brown led Stevens with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds and freshman Annetta Panayides added eight points and seven boards in her first collegiate start. The six-point victory was the second straight for Stevens and evened the team's record at 5-5. The Ducks improved to 2-0 in conference play. Stevens has never lost to the Highlanders under Coach Haughey.

Emily Swanson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Highlanders. Houghton fell to 5-6 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

Turning Point
  • Trailing by one after the opening quarter, a three-pointer by junior Megan Anderson opened the second-quarter scoring, giving Stevens a 16-14 lead.
  • Stevens increased its advantage throughout the second stanza, pulling ahead by nine after a Panayides fast-break layup.
  • Houghton scored its only point of the period on a Leslie Moose free throw, more than six minutes into the frame.
  • The Ducks scored the next 10 points to take an 18-point lead at halftime.
  • The staunch Stevens defense forced 12 Houghton misses and five Highlander turnovers during the game-deciding 10 second quarter.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held an advantage in three-pointers made and free throws made. The Ducks converted six three-pointers and went 18-for-24 from the line, while Houghton only scored six points from behind the arc and went 14-of-21 from the charity stripe.
  • Panayides converted three of her four field-goal attempts and led all players with three blocks. The three rejections matched the Tinton Falls, New Jersey natives season total coming into the game.
  • Sophomore Alison Criswell snagged a game-high three steals.
  • Eight different players scored for the Ducks.
  • Freshman Christina Li matched a career-high with 12 points. The Anaheim, California native was one of only three players to reach double figures.
  • Stevens held the edge in points off turnovers, second-chance points, and bench points.

From the Court
  • "I thought we got key contributions out of our bench, which was key."
  • "Annetta stepped up and had a solid game, which is what we needed."
