No. 21 Men’s Soccer Tops Utica 4-0 on Senior Night

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 26, 2018)  – Senior Daniel Aversano scored two goals for the second straight match to lead No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Soccer to a 4-0 victory over Utica College Friday in an Empire 8 Conference fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday morning, but was moved up 16 hours because of the projected Nor'Easter set to impact the area overnight.

Sophomore Kevin Brito and freshman Jon Valcarce also found the back of the net for Stevens, who moved to 15-2-1 and closed out conference play with a 7-0- record. The 15 wins in the regular season are the most for the program since 2012 and the perfect E8 regular season marked the first for the program since 2014.

Randy Miksch made eight saves for the Pioneers, who closed out the 2018 season at 5-12-1 and 1-6. Senior Aaron Henry did not need to make a save to record his ninth clean sheet.

Prior to the match, Stevens honored 10 student-athletes for the contributions and successes to the men's soccer program.

Pivotal Point
  • Aversano converted a penalty in the 21st minute to open the scoring.
  • Senior Chris Cesario earned the penalty after getting taken down by Miksch in the penalty area.
  • The converted penalty was Stevens' third of the year and the second by Aversano.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 22-2 edge in shots, including a 12-0 edge in shots on net. The 22 shots are the third-highest total of the season.
  • The Ducks earned eight corners and remain among the nation's leaders. Utica did not earn a corner.
  • Cesario led all players with five shots, while Aversano fired all four of his shots on net to lead all players.
  • Aversano extended his point total to 26, extending his career high. The Upper Saddle River, New Jersey native has recorded a point in four straight matches.
  • Freshman Adam Silva added an assist. The Wayne, New Jersey native leads the team with seven.

Unsung Heroes
  • Stevens' defensive corps did not allow a shot on goal to Utica. The prideful group has kept play out of dangerous areas throughout the season, preventing Henry from having to make difficult saves. Five of Henry's nine clean sheets have not required a save.

From the Sidelines
  • "Good effort from the team and happy with the result."
  • "I honestly can't say enough about this group of seniors. They have created the culture and standards of the Soccer program here at Stevens. They are incredible people with amazing character. Each one has been a leader and they have created a legacy in their time here at Stevens. I can't wait wait to see how successful they are and the impact they make when they go out into the world."
